Today  I share a review of my favorite bookstore Riemann in Coburg, located at the Market Place. A sweet independent bookstore that has the extra little something. When I was a child, I had this dream of working there when I grow up. I spent so much time at Riemann; reading, browsing and buying books that I am almost part of the furniture. This sweet, cozy bookstore simply has it all. It is just so much more than just awesome books in shelves. There is excellent service, information, coffee and pastries available at the little café (Caféchen) on the first floor. The staff is very knowledgable and helpful. Also, do follow their Facebook page and website for updates, newsletters, lectures and events.

The Bookstore Riemann exists over 200 years. In 1805, Johann Gerhard Riemann founded a bookbinding store and one year later they added the bookstore. The current owners are Martina Riegert and her husband Martin Vögele. They took over after Irmgard Clausen, in January 2015. Irmgard Clausen was in charge of the bookstore for 28 years and transformed the bookstore into what it is today.

Riemann bookstore makes me realize how nice it is to visit independent bookstores, filled with an amazing book collection. It is important that they do exist.  The love and care I feel at this place makes me wish that there would be more like this one available and less of the chain bookstores. When you browse through the store you find book recommendations from Riemann personnel. It seems that the Riemann team really loves what they are doing, love books and obviously enjoy reading.

If you are looking for a new book, a good cup of coffee, a snack or a reading by a great author, this is the place you want to go. Riemann just has character that is lacking in chain bookstores – it just has it all. If you are looking for souvenirs – book-related or from Coburg, notebooks, pens or pencils, postcards, art supply – you will find it there. It is just so much fun to get lost in there. They offer “Leseförderung” as well and so much more. Make sure to check out their website for details. Sometimes I visit Riemann with my son and we enjoy the children’s section. Believe me, you will not be disappointed.

There are readings for kids that take place in the little café and sometimes in the kid’s section of the bookstore. I also enjoy the fantastic travel/cooking and art section  with seating arrangements for you to sit, read and browse. Their selection is full of interesting titles. You will find an international sections with selected books in English, Spanish, French and Italian.

You will be hit by a pang of nostalgia and love when you browse the bookstore and find out about the history of this amazing bookstore. If you are in Coburg you basically cannot miss stepping in at least once. It is an absolute delight if you are a book lover, enjoy reading and appreciate books. Make sure you discover the upper floor and the little café. I highly recommend this place. Bookworm paradise!

Heute mal eine Rezension auf Deutsch. Mein Deutsch nach 11 Jahren USA lässt machmal zu wünschen übrig.  Es ist wirklich erstaunlich, was passiert, wenn man eine Sprache nicht mehr ständig spricht. Nun, ich werde mein Bestes geben.

Meine Mutter empfahl mir den Film “Zuhause in der Wildnis “auf ARTE und ich sah ihn mit Begeisterung. Ein toller Film – ganz nach meinem Geschmack. Ich wollte gleich mehr über das Leben von Sanna, David und ihrer Familie in Kanada wissen. Facebook ist sehr gut für solche Nachforschungen. Jetzt bin ich mit beiden “befreundet” und wir schreiben uns ab und zu Nachrichten, was ich toll finde. Sanna Seven Deer’s Buch Mein Herz in deinem weiten Land gibt es bis jetzt nur in Deutsch und zwar von Knaur Verlag. Es ist klar, dass ich dieses Buch sofort gekauft und es regelrecht verschlungen habe. Hier meine Rezension.

In ihrer Autobiographie erzählt Sanna, die ehemalige Sarah,  dass sie mit damals 20 Jahren auf der Suche nach etwas Neuem war. Sie studierte und lebte in Hamburg, wusste jedoch, das dieses Studium nicht wirklich die Richtung war in die sie gehen wollte. Was sie interessierte, ist die indianische Lebensweise, der Kult und deren Geistwesen. Natürlich besuchte sie jede Ausstellung in diesem Themenbereich. Als sie erfuhr, dass ein Indianer im Hamburger Völkerkundemuseum an einer riesigen Skulptur arbeitet, sah sie hier eine Möglichkeit mehr über Land und Leute zu erfahren. Der kanadische Indianer David ist sechzehn Jahre älter als sie, was sie allerdings nicht als Hindernis siehts. Sie verliebt sich in ihn – Hals über Kopf. Keiner kann sich vorstellen, dass die beiden jemals miteinander glücklich werden. Sanna folgt ihrem Herzen, denn sie weiss, David ist die Liebe ihres Lebens. Sie lässt Deutschland hinter sich und zieht mit ihm nach Kanada. Sie hat keinen Job, spricht die Sprache nicht und weder seine Heimat noch seine Familie. Der Anfang war sehr schwer.

Mittlerweile ist das Paar 17 Jahre verheiratet und lebt mit seinen vier Kindern auf der abgeschiedenen Ranch Shaheylah in der Wildnis Kanadas. “Shaheylah entstammt dem Indianischen und lässt sich nicht konkret mit einem Wort übersetzen. Es ist eher  ein Begriff, der so viel heisst wie ‘Ein guter, glücklicher, harmonischer Ort’.”Der Leser erfährt viel über unberührte Natur, indianische Mystik und viel Abenteuer. Aber auch von riesigen Schneemassen und wilden Tieren.

Der Weg zur Shayeylah Ranch war lang und beschwerlich und geprägt von vielen Vorurteilen, Geldsorgen,  Rassismus und Umwegen. “Von David habe ich gelernt, dass das, was man sieht, nicht immer real ist – und das, was real ist, nicht immer sichtbar ist. Daher sind David und ich sehr vorsichtig, wenn wir Menschen begegnen.” Sanna, eigentlich Sarah, hat nicht nur ihren Namen geändert, sondern auch ihren Glauben und die Lebenseinstellung.

Ist Sanna nun glücklich? Oder zieht es sie zurück in die Grossstadt?

Ich, als grosser Kanada-fan, fand das Buch toll – auch, als Sanna von ihren vier Geburten schreibt und wie die Familie mit der Erziehung ihrer vier Kinder umgeht, sie selbst unterrichtet  inmitten unberührter Natur. “Du bist viel stärker als du glaubst. Du kannst alles überwinden , was sich dir in den Weg stellt. Bisher hast du nur einen Bruchteil deiner inneren Kraft genutzt. Du musst nur Mut haben und daran glauben. Entspanne dich und sieh dem Abenteuer gelassen ins Auge.”

Fazit: Eine faszinierende, spannende und fesselnde Autobiographie, die Einblick verschafft in eine neue Kultur, ein neues Leben, ein neues Land und Liebe. Sanna will einfach nur den Augenblick leben. “Was wir für die nächsten zwanzig Jahre geplant haben?“ Nichts!“

Realität ist nicht, was wir mit unserm Verstand wahrnehmen, sondern was wir sehen, wenn wir die Welt mit unserem inneren Auge betrachten. Sich selbst zu finden heisst nicht, alle Brücken abzubrechen, sondern ins Gleichgewicht mit sich und seinem Umfeld zu kommen.”

I am still in Coburg and do enjoy my time here. Of course, now that my parents are able to take my son once in a while and also bring him to bed without a problem at night, I do use this opportunity to go out and enjoy the nightlife again. It has been a while I have to admit that I was able to go out and feel really good about it. I don’t know why but having a child I constantly think (“worry”) about him, even when I know he is with my parents. Thoughts like “Is he angry? Are my parents able to bring him to bed? Is he screaming his little head of?” and such. On the other hand, as soon as my friend was here the other day to pick me up, I did not look back. I got in the car and yelled “Drive!” while smiling. So that Thursday night we have been to Sonderbar in Coburg which I think has the best food, service and live music in Coburg.

Quality of food: 5/5 STARS

I ate the Feta Salad and my friend the veggie flame cake and a little side salad. Superb! The portions are huge, delicious and the prize is reasonable. Everything tastes fresh and homemade.

Atmosphere:  5/5 STARS

Sonderbar is a great place to have a romantic dinner with great music, but also to enjoy live bands. The bar is not too dark and not to bright. The lighting is great to not have the feeling of sitting in the spotlight. The little seating booths close to the entrance are great for couples. The stage is in the back but you are also able to eat there. See pictures above.

Service: 4/5 STARS

The personnel is very professional, friendly and fast. Keep in mind to make reservations definitely for Friday and Saturday evening. This is usually when there is live music and the place is pretty full! Check out this place. It is amazing! You will not regret it.
