Landestheater Coburg: Schubert’s “Die Winterreise”

“Fremd bin ich eingezogen, fremd zieh ich wieder aus.” (I came a stranger – I depart a stranger) Hello! My husband and I were fortunate to get tickets to the première of Schubert’s Winterreise at the Landestheater in Coburg  last Saturday. I like classical music but…

The Book Review: “Treibsand” by Henning Mankell

Do you like good oil? Like really good oil? I posted an article on one of my favorite oils ever – linseed oil. These days you can buy Linseed oil almost everywhere and so many different brands as well. But let me tell you, they are not all that good. Especially if the expiration date is over one year. This means, chemicals are added for sure! I was more than happy when my mom told me about an oil mill in Haig/Kronach where you can purchase freshly pressed linseed oil, many others oils and healthy yummy things. The store owner Cindy and René Langner prepare highly nutritious oils made of organic seeds and nuts which is raw quality as they state. They press these oils under 37 degrees celsius and fill it by hand in in violett glass to protect it from light.

You can add their oils to almost any type of food. Desserts, Cake, Ice cream, fruit, salads and dips but they also inform you that you should not cook with any other oil BUT coconut oil. Linseed oil should never be heated!!! I wrote an article on how I make my own hand/face cream and I do use their almond oil and sometimes coconut oil which means I could theoretically eat my cream, hah!

How do I store my oils?

My linseed oil had been literally made a couple of hours before I arrived at the store and is very fresh. To guarantee the freshness of the oil you need to store it in the fridge. All other oils can be stored at room temperature but not exposed to straight sunlight. If you want to store coconut oil you have to decide if you want the oil to be liquid or sort of hard. Coconut oil stored over 25+ degree becomes liquid! My beloved linseed oil expires after two (2!) months, even when stored in the fridge. Yep, that kind of fresh! Cindy and René Langner also inform that a brown residue might build up at the bottom of any oil bottle they fill up for you. This is just a mark of quality and can be eaten as well. The most important part is that their oil is pure. Nothing added. Amazing!

They offer a plethora of different oils. Some of them you probably have never heard of. I never tried mustard oil for example or black cumin oil. See their website here for details.

How do I get there?

“Thirst”-Day Update

Hello! I just wanted to share a quick update on my little “no-alcohol-for-a-week-challenge”.  If you are not aware of what “Thirst”-Day is, read my previous article here. One week flew by like nothing but I do have to say that it was not that easy to…

Reflecting.

Hello!

These days I really pay close attention to how I feel and listen to my body; listen to changes. I think it is important to take a step back once in a while and reflect on my life and on my overall well-being. I had a long conversation with my Reiki mentor today and he asked me Where I am right now. It made me think for the rest of the day on everything that is going on in my life currently and where I stand. Most of the time I feel like I am in the middle of something, with no beginning or end in sight. The days are just flying by and I am looking at my son who grows up so fast – insane to imagine that he is already on this planet for over two years. I have been busy running around lately, with newspaper interviews, new ones to come, books to read, reviews and articles to write and tons of research. I love what I am doing, don’t get me wrong. Sometimes it just seems there are not enough hours in a day to accomplish everything that I have planned.

Then I step back, take a deep breath and reflect. Sometimes it is just not possible to get it all done but it does not matter. Tomorrow is another day – I don’t need to lose my mind or sleep over it. When I am passionate about something this is really difficult however. I usually think that there is so much more out there to get done. New friends to meet, new projects, new things in health, beauty and food and new motivation, moving, studying. The list is just endless. All these things make me restless but at the same time I feel that everything and anything is possible. Every little day means everything will be renewed and you can start all over again. You get another chance. Amazing, right?

I looked at my little calendar the other day and there is this reminder in July; Daniela 35th birthday. It was so weird to read and actually fathom. I know it is only a number but still. If you think about living until 80ish to 90ish it means that I am getting closer to the middle of my life in a way. This thought alone makes me feel strange.  I do know that we can never really know when we reached the middle- we don’t know when it will be all over for sure and we cannot play along on this earth anymore.

I keep in mind that I do have to hit pause once in a while and just take life for what it is. Don’t get to worked up about things I cannot change and take it one day at a time. That I cannot rush anything and that sometimes it is important to stop and smell the roses. Or play in the snow and build a snowman. To take things for what they are! The reason for this article today was mainly because I finished Henning Mankell’s latest book “Treibsand” today and my husband caught me crying in the kitchen in the morning. He was one of my favorite authors and I read all his books. Just to realize again that he is gone and finish his autobiography made me so sad. It was his last book and made me think about death, disease and change.  ;(

It was nice that my husband was there and me finishing Mankell’s book lead to a nice conversation about life, the meaning of it and it made me think about writing this article today. Reflecting on what is important in life. Reflecting that there are beginnings, middles and ends to everything. Sometimes it would be so much easier not to think that much, or not to read that much but it is what I love. Have a good morning, day, evening or night. Wherever you are!

Where are you in life? What is on your mind lately?

The Book Review: “Roter Engel” (“Life Support”) by Tess Gerritsen

Hello!

It is time for a new Book Review. I have read so much lately that books are piled up everywhere, waiting to be reviewed but I did not have time. When you read my recent post Five Things, you know that I was all over the place getting things done.

I am a huge crime novel fan. Especially, the ones by the Swedish author Henning Mankell.  Actually, not many other crime novels came close to his writing – until my mom discovered Tess Gerritsen and read her book Roter Engel in two days. And when my mom finishes a crime novel so quickly, I know it will be catching and worth the read. I literally read the book in two days as well – it was so good.

About the author: Terry (Tess) Gerritsen (1953) is a retired physician and an American novelist. That she worked many years als a MD is without a doubt great for this amazing medical story. She clearly has great knowledge on what she is writing about. Here is the book review.

Dr Toby Harper’s life is somewhat in control and she wanted to keep it this way. She is overworked however. One night she admits an older gentlemen to Springer Hospital. He is delirious, completely naked and does not respond to any medical treatment. He then disappears without a trace under her care.  Dr Harper of course feels responsible for this and her search for the old man leads her to another gentlemen with similar symptoms. She finds out that these infections can only be spread through tissue exchange. There are many other twists to the story; people disappear, a pregnant prostitute and much more that is all connected somehow. I do not want to give away too much but I really did enjoy the fast paced style of writing that kept me turning the pages. The story is thrilling and captivating  with many intelligent dialogs and very well written.

What frightened me a bit was that the plot seems very realistic and raised many moral and ethical questions for me. This novel: creepy but so good. I highly recommend it!

Have you read the book yet? If yes, what did you think? Order the English version here and click here to purchase the book in German. This is her website. Enjoy and Happy Reading.
