On Keeping Traditions Alive

Hello!

Let’s talk about traditions and why I love them. I am German, and so is my son. He has a bunch of citizenships actually! I just think it is important for him to speak German, so we raise him bilingual/trilingual and he is doing really well with it. It is amazing how much kids pick up at a very young age and how my son knows that I speak differently to him than his dad. My son speaks German with me and English/French to my husband. Pretty awesome!

Besides that, I try to teach him German traditions. This does not mean he has to walk around with Lederhosen and German Folk Music – Hell no! 🙂 I am just trying to carry on German traditions by reading books in German to him for example.  He listens to German songs once in a while and of course he will put his boots out on December 6th when St. Nikolaus comes. St.Nikolaus usually brings Kinder-chocolate and a small toy – whatever fits in his boots. My dad used to dress up as St. Nikolaus when my siblings and I were young and it was always something special. He did such a great job that the neighbors booked him to act as Nikolaus for their kids as well.

One thing I wanted to make for him this year is an Adventskalender. Last year I bought him the one picture below and he loved it even though he had no clue what it is all about. But, chocolate yaaaaaay and opening up a tiny window to get the chocolate out. Unfortunately with all our traveling I was not able to make him one this time but I got him the same one as last year.

I just love to keep German traditions alive. This is why I am looking forward to spending some quality time with my family and at Coburg’s  famous Christmas Market and drink some Glühwein and hot Honey Wine.

This particular Christmas Market is our favorite and just opened up last Wednesday. It will be open until 23 December – one day before Christmas. Oh, in Germany, Christmas Eve (Heiliger Abend)  is celebrated on the 24th and kids receive gifts usually in the evening.

What traditions do you have and keep alive? I would love to hear from you!

Thank you for reading my blog.
