My first language is German, but I am more comfortable writing in English. That might actually be because I lived in NYC for many years, finished a Bachelor’s in Forensic Psychology and a Master’s in Applied Linguistics in English. Yay, me! Some terms or phrases were so weird to me in the beginning. For example, you don’t just ask someone, “Hey, how are you?” without expecting an answer. Or when people say literally, actually and oh my gooooosh a million times in conversations. Let’s break these phrases down and start actually with actually: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Victory Actually
Translation: Did you misspell obnoxious?<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cActually<\/em> it\u2019s a trilby, not a fedora.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cActually<\/em>, you don\u2019t, because the Upper West Side ends at 96th, so what you mean is, you live in Manhattan Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, actually<\/em>, you don\u2019t mean \u2018literally,\u2019 you mean \u2018figuratively,\u2019 no?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, actually<\/em>, you\u2019re not nauseous, you\u2019re nauseated, unless of course you really mean\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUh, hang on, no, it\u2019s not an umlaut, it\u2019s a di\u00e6resis. They\u2019re actually<\/em> different, phonologically.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s actually<\/em> not an acronym, it\u2019s an initialism. To be an acronym\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pleasant Surprise Actually
Translation: My low expectation has been exceeded.<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cActually<\/em>, you\u2019re right\u2026 mostly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re funny. You actually<\/em> just made me laugh out loud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s actually<\/em> a very good question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI mean it was a wedding but actually<\/em> I kind of had a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cActually<\/em>, yeah, that might\u2026 that could actually<\/em> work. Good job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWow, yeah no, I did, I do love it. It is my favorite. You actually<\/em> remembered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Low Self-Esteem Actually
Translation: Yay, stupid me.<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHuh, I actually<\/em> like the way this looks on me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, mean, median and mode. I\u2019ve actually<\/em> heard of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt went great. I actually<\/em> contributed a few ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI actually<\/em> think this came out not too bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThings are good. Great, even? I don\u2019t know, I\u2019m actually<\/em> in a good place these days. Happy, even.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019d never played before and I was actually<\/em> pretty good!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Damage-Control Actually
Translation: Join me in deciding this isn\u2019t a big deal.<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI actually<\/em> can\u2019t help you tonight, I have plans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI actually<\/em> don\u2019t have a copy of my r\u00e9sum\u00e9 on me, but you can just Google me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would love to, and happy birthday to your cousin, but I\u2019m, actually<\/em>, I can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, I remember saying I could but actually<\/em> stuff\u2019s kind of crazy so I can do it, but tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, actually<\/em>, I didn\u2019t read the whole article but that\u2019s not the point. What I\u2019m commenting on, and really, what I\u2019d appreciate your response to, is the tone and the general attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Diplomatic Correction Actually
Translation: Sir, no.<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know. Craig. Yep. Hi, Craig. We\u2019ve actually<\/em> met before. Couple times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI did actually<\/em> turn it off and then turn it back on, so no, that\u2019s not it. So can you help?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe, actually<\/em>. My doctor\u2019s a woman. Anyway, what she said was\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was my first language, so actually<\/em>, I\u2019m pretty sure I pronounced it right: broo-sketta.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Self-Soother Actually
Translation: Control the narrative, control the narrative.<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo fuck it, you know? And, actually<\/em>, maybe it\u2019s a good thing I got fired. Fuck that job. Best thing that ever happened to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEmbarrassed? Why would I be embarrassed? No. actually<\/em>, I thought it was funny.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn fact, nah, you know what? I\u2019m relieved. I don\u2019t have time for that shit, so\u00a0actually<\/em>, it\u2019s better that I haven\u2019t heard back from him. Fuck him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
